INDUCED BREEDING OF INDIGENOUS FISHES
We have successfully developed a model hatchery unit for induced breeding of Clarias batrachus or walking catfish (magur in Bengali). This low-cost model can be replicated anywhere using locally available materials. This fish has high food value and hence high market value. Based on the model unit, we are designing a large-scale, scientifically managed hatchery unit for C. batrachus for the benefit of local people.
The design of the hatchery has been kept simple so that this can be easily constructed and operated by any interested farmers. Induced breeding of this species needs extra understanding of many factors like physiology of brooders, physical characteristics of water, induced breeding techniques etc. We are planning to extend our experiences to those who show interest in this aspect to make them self-sustainable.
